How long have you volunteered for MESA?: That is a question which I am constantly asked. Many people are surprised to learn that I have been an active participant with MESA for 11 years. I often jest that I am part of the furniture because I am currently the longest serving volunteer on the hot-line!! "What made you decide to volunteer for MESA? My attitude towards sexual assault is that it not only is a heinous crime, it is also a completely selfish act inflicted upon a person. The ramifications are endless and assault knows no boundaries. During my life, I have encountered many people who have been traumatized by sexual assault. I was in fact blind sighted to learn that a good friend of mine was violently raped; not once but twice by the same person. As a result of her rapes, she did actually become pregnant. For about 3 months, she kept her ordeal to herself and became depressed. She did try to end her life but luckily was found in time. When my friend told me all which had happened to her - I was numb. Overall, I found myself completely helpless, frustrated and embarrassed because I wanted to help her but really just didn't know how to help. On that day, it hit home very hard the effects and outcomes which sexual assault can inflict upon a person. Ever since then, I made a decision to educate myself so that I know how to help my friends and anyone else for that matter because no one deserves to be alone. How else do you work with MESA? Many people are not aware but I am a Realtor. I mention this because I have incorporated into my business model, with assistance of Home Buyers and Property Sellers, the opportunity where upon I shall donate a generous amount of my 'pay check' to MESA whenever I am hired to facilitate a real estate transaction!
